Farmers Fare
Register early for Saturday APRIL 3rd - 4 to 6pm
Due to the overwhelming success of our first Indian Cooking Class at Farmers Fare we are scheduling another on Saturday April 3rd 2010 from 4 to 6pm.

The class will be taught by cooking instructor and restaurateur Gunjan Gilbert of “Tandoor Downeast”. This workshop will walk you through how to make some common recipes in an Indian “Thali”. In Hindi “Thali”
means plate, usually a large steel or copper plate with flat bread, basmati rice, vegetarian or non-vegetarian curries, and sauces.

The menu for the cooking class will be:

Parathas-Flat breads
Chutney
Daal Sambhar-Vegetarian curry
Lamb curry

Gunjan, a native of Pune, India, attended college and graduate school in Michigan before moving to Maine. Here, she met and eventually married Christian Gilbert. In 2005, the Gilberts started on a two-person mission to introduce Indian culture and cuisine to Downeast Maine. Through more than a dozen educational programs, Gunjan has brought the healthy, interesting, and unique aspects of India to Maine and the people from all over the world who vacation along the coast. Gunjan and Christian also provide prepared Indian meals at farmers markets in Blue Hill, Ellsworth, and Winter Harbor.

"When I teach people about Indian culture and cuisine," Gunjan says, "people also become more accepting and understanding of all the cultures of this world."

Farmers Fare
Make yourself a delicious local breakfast at home!!

Chris and Craig, the ever charming in-house butchers of Farmers Fare, make Scrapple also known as Pon Haus, Lumberjack's Pate and variously known as White Pudding in Ireland. Choice trimmings of pork from the butchering process are made into scrapple to avoid wasting any part of the locally raised animal. Broth and breadcrumbs or oatmeal bind the ground meat into blocks which are easily cut into slices ready to be pan fried. Scrapple is best known as a regional American food of the Mid-Atlantic States (Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland). Scrapple is commonly considered an ethnic food of the Pennsylvania Dutch, including the Mennonite and Amish.

Paired with some delicious locally produced eggs from PRIMO Restaurant in Rockland a hearty breakfast can be had by all in the comfort of your own home. Aren't the labels lovely on the egg carton....cannily made from recycled menus!!

Farmers Fare
Coastal Children's Museum, Rockland, Maine!!!!
A sensibly behatted and begloved Rhys chose the recipient of the first Farmers Fare "Pay-it-forward" donation of $500 accrued from the generosity of all those who "fed the cow" since Farmers Fare opened just a few short months ago.
Yea for the community spirit and generosity which covered the cost of the mini gelato portions and left $500 over to be donated to a worthy local cause!

Here is a link to the Coastal Children's Museum

...and here is a link to the "Pay-it-forward" story recently featured in the Portland Press Herald

Farmers Fare
Come on over to FF at 3:30pm Saturday Feb 13th for the first drawing of "Pay it forward"
We'll have some surprise fun finding out who receives the first of the monies collected so far from our "Pay-it-forward" mini portion gelato.

What is Pay-it-forward??
"At Farmers Fare your ice cream (actually Gelato) is FREE! If you have a buck...feed the cow...pay  $1 a serving if you can, pay more if you want. If you don’t have a buck, no WORRIES, take an ice cream and enjoy. Feed the cow next time! The buck does not stop here: YOUR contributions let us buy more frozen joy (from Gelato Fiasco in Brunswick), and all of the leftover money goes to local charitable organizations of your choice."

We have ???? dollars leftover right now (we'll find the amount out later today and let you know) , after paying for the gelato wholesale, which we will be donating to a local charity.

At 3:30 we will be choosing the name of the lucky charity by drawing from the delightful bucket pictured above which contains the names written down by our wonderful customers.

Farmers Fare
Home Grown Farm and Market reuses Farmers Fare spent vegetable oil to keep fish warm!!

Every now and again Home Grown Farm picks up the used vegetable oil from Farmers Fare to help generate heat and electricity which in turn run the under tank heating coils that circulate warm water for their sustainably raised tilapia. Energy efficiency and sustainable food production are not just quaint words, these 2 concepts are integrated with Home Grown’s ability to produce quality food at an affordable price because if you can’t afford to buy it, then it is NOT sustainable.

As April comes around we will be carrying produce from Home Grown Farm.
